Understanding Your Support
We understand that separation can be a difficult time, and the costs of sorting things out can sometimes feel like an added worry. To help, the government has introduced the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme in England and Wales – extra financial support so that more families can use mediation to agree on what’s best for their children.
What is the voucher scheme?
The scheme was set up to encourage parents to choose mediation instead of going through court. It provides a one-off contribution of up to £500 per family (not per person) to help with the cost of mediation sessions.
Who can use it?
The voucher can be used if your mediation is about:
- Arrangements for your children (where they live, time with each parent, holidays, schooling, communication)
- Arrangements for children and finances together (doesn’t cover financial issues alone)
How do I get a voucher?
Initial Meeting (MIAM)
At your first individual meeting, your mediator will discuss your situation and determine eligibility.
Application Process
If eligible, your mediator will apply for the funding on your behalf automatically.
Direct Payment
The voucher payment goes directly to your mediator to reduce your session costs.
What else do I need to know?
The voucher does not cover your MIAM (your first individual meeting).
Only one voucher per family is available.
It is a grant, not a loan – you don't have to pay it back.
Your mediator will keep you updated on how much of the £500 has been used.
